July - Traveling Extreme - Part 1

After working like mad to get all our strawberries processed, we entered the month of July with packed suitcases and a car crammed full of stuff. We left for California on Thursday evening, July 2nd. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to get enough sleep the night before, so we weren't able to drive as far as we would've liked before stopping. Travel is never exactly how you plan it; we remember Oregon. We were prepared, with mapquest directions and a great atlas. We drove a ways into Iowa before our lack of sleep caught up with us and we stopped at a rest stop. We took a nap and walked around before we were "on the road again." To be honest, Nebraska wasn't all that exciting, but Andy was extremely psyched about the Colorado mountains. He drove through Denver and the mountains, making it most of the way before it got too dark; they were pretty cool, though impossible to photograph while you are driving. Mandy continued from Colorado into Utah while it was dark. The landscape changed, but we didn't realize we were in desert with hills until we woke up in the morning at the next reststop. We stopped in Mesquite while traveling through the southern tip of Nevada, and man was it hot!!! We wanted to drive the strip in Las Vegas, but we settled for the highway drivethrough, because we weren't sure how to get anywhere else. We made it into California on a later schedule than we had planned, of course, but still got to Grandma's on the 4th. Willow was pretty good, considering the circumstances. She got to play with her new baby doll, and other new items in the car. She managed to sleep some, but by the time we got to Grandma's we were all kinda cranky.
